Power of HIS Presence! Distinguishing Character

Text:Psalm 16:11 and Exodus 33:12-16

Introduction:To be in the presence of God transforms our thinking and our lives.  By being in His presence He is able to show us the path of life.  In walking in the path of life, literally to walk in the way of eternal life we find blessings and favor with God.

Point 1: Desiring the Assurance of God’s Favor!

  • We need to desire God’s favor in our life. 12-13
  • “If I have found favor in Your sight,…”

If is a strong word.  Moses wants to make sure he is pleasing to God.

  1. Defining “Found”…In the Hebrew language Matsa means to have attained or acquired a position or to obtain something.
  2. Defining “Favor”…means to express favor or grace. To impart a blessing to one who is unworthy. To bend or stoop down in mercy and kindness to an inferior.
  • “Let me know your ways…”

*To know means to ascertain or come to know by seeing or observing.

*Ways means distinct character qualities manifested in the way a person lives their life.  These define a person (priorities, decision, words, and actions.)

  • may know You…”

*To know means to possess personal knowledge and understanding as a husband knows his wife.  It is an understanding that results in changed behavior to bring security, joy, and pleasure…

  • So that, I may find favor in Your sight.” Favor with God is predicated on knowing His ways thus coming to know Him.  This is why we  are told we must look to Jesus the author and perfecter of faith. Moses desires to know and please the LORD so that God will shower the blessings and riches of glory by being in His presence.

Point  2: The Two-Fold Promise of God!

  • In the Lord’s presence there is rest and comfort
    • “My presence shall go with you…”

Remember, to be in the presence of someone you need to be face-to-face with them.  In His presence there is joy and pleasure.

Read: Psalm 16:11 and Ephesians 2:4-6

  • and I will give you rest.”

The word rest here means to give rest, comfort, and peace from labors, troubles, and calamities.  It can mean to experience joy and pleasures in the rest and security in Him.

Point 3: His Distinguished Character of Presence

  • The Power of His Presence is what sets up apart!
    • How is God’s favor made known?

Favor with God is manifest in two different ways

*It is manifested by His presence in our lives.

*It is manifest by walking with God and walking in His ways.

  • How does God’s Presence Distinguish Us?

The word “distinguish” in the Hebrew language mean to make wonderful to show marvelous.  To also means to become admirable, and illustrious which means to renowned, because of integrity/virtue.
