Have you ever noticed we really love those sermons that are positive, powerful, and encouraging? Honestly, every sermon can be all theses things and much more with the correct Mindset and perspective. This morning is one of those kind of sermons. I personally like it when someone takes the time to warn and counsel me of potential dangers that I would face in the future if I don’t listen to and respond to their warning. The LORD has a grave warning for us…DO NOT misplace your trust! The title of today’s sermon is “Thus Says the LORD, Cursed is the Man…” We will be examining the three parts of Jeremiah 17:5. We will begin by describing what is meant by “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind.” This is a pretty ugly statement but rest assured it does not literally mean “Everybody” who is a human being. The word mankind specifically identifies two characteristics of the person you should not trust. Next we will discover what “And makes flesh his strength” Too often we trust in our own strength and wisdom. I have news for you, you are not all mighty and knowing like the LORD. I know we humans don’t overtly think or say this but often our actions reveal we think we are stronger and wiser than the LORD. Finally, we will examine what it means in the close of the verse, “whose heart turns away from the LORD.” We will define the Hebrew word “turn away” and then look at how the spiritual heart within us can be turned away from the LORD.
